This class is designed to
introduce students to the
basics of medical billing
for physicians. Help
determine if Medical Billing
Career is for you.
Students will learn the abbreviations used related to billing, definitions of words/phrases that are used, how to complete a clean HCFA 1500 or CMS 1500, how to take the doctors’ words and be able to find the right code that matches for billing purposes (ICD-9, CPT, and basic modifiers). We don’t do the coding for the doctor, but we can help find the right code. Students will learn the names of our area insurances and how to work with them more effectively. The concepts of participating, preferred, out of network physicians for certain insurances.
Students will be taught the importance of collecting copays, coinsurance, and deductible and ways to accomplish this politely but firmly. Students will also learn how to work with self pay patients and worker’s compensation insurance companies and the basic rules/policies governing this group of patients.
Students will be introduced to the concepts of HIPAA and how that would apply for front desk and billing duties. We
will briefly review the
changes from ICD-9 to ICD-10
and 5010. Students will be taught how to read a insurance referral and what to watch out for regarding possible expired referral, referral for medical condition the doctor does not practice, wrong doctor altogether on the referral, and the basic concepts of the use of referrals for billing.
Basic understanding of
Explanation of Benefits (EOBs)
from insurance companies. Students will review Medicare’s ABN rules and how that may apply to medical billing.
